Wind.
Timed by sound.
Four ultrasonic sensors on a square send sound to each other. Wind makes the sound arrive slightly earlier in one direction and later in the other. That difference gives wind speed and direction. No moving parts.
Wind carries sound.
Send and receive
One sensor sends a short burst of ultrasound. The other three receive it.
Wind changes the timing
Sound moving with the wind arrives a little earlier. Sound moving against it arrives a little later.
Speed and direction
The sensors take turns sending. Comparing the timings across the square gives wind speed and direction.
We compare the received sound waves with each other. This measures timing differences much smaller than one wave.
Why ultrasonic
No moving parts
Nothing to wear out or freeze, and no recalibration after storms.
Measures light wind
Works in very light wind, because nothing has to start turning.
Speed and direction
One sensor gives both. No separate wind vane.
Very low power
Tiny ultrasonic chips use very little power, so the sensor can run on solar.
